Greenwood Ave. Magazine

Greenwood Ave. Magazine is a quarterly magazine that is a celebration of Black entrepreneurs and overlooked visionaries around the world.

I joined the Greenwood Ave. team as the team was ramping up to start the production of their magazine; the issue was that they needed to learn how to get there. I helped refresh the existing Greenwood Ave. brand to represent a print publication and was hands-on with each issue, from laying out every spread to directing over 30 photo shoots. Within the year, we have not only grown our subscriber list but also gotten into Barnes & Noble across the country.

One of the main aspects of the brand refresh was focused on the typography used in the magazine. I wanted the fonts to tie back to the magazine's ethos - amplifying Black entrepreneurs worldwide.

The primary typeface, Champion Gothic, is a wood-carved font used in the 1960s, similar to the fonts used in protest posters during the civil rights movement. The secondary type, Perfectly Nineties, is a callback to newspaper typefaces used during the transition from handprint to digital. The type system created is meant to be mobile and flexible, reflecting every industry featured.

Each magazine issue is focused on a different industry with its unique layout and structure to reflect the entrepreneurs featured.

My roles included Art Director and design and layout Lead, and I headed up the Greenwood Ave. brand refresh.
